Things don't get "eaten up" by black hole, they get squished and ripped at the event horizon. From your perspective, stuff will approach the event horizon more and more, slowing down the closer it is to it. In fact, you never see something entering a black hole because from your point of view it takes an infinite amount of time to do it. All the energy/mass is radiated during its downward agony or what is left adds up to the total mass of the black hole. Does that make sense ?
