the solution many upcoming artists resort to is to operate with illegal samples, releasing bootlegs/white labels until a song hits the big time, when they then let the big record label sort out the licensing of the sample... you're unlikely to get in trouble using little snippets from movies in your own tunes if you're not famous...

charity is very rarely taken as an excuse for breaking the law - but might be a successful argument for getting free reign to use a sample if you go through the proper channels...
