I'd choose VW over BMW. I like the design of VW's better although I've never tried either brands.

As for staying on topic though. Having owned both, they are nice cars, the VW will cost less but will require more maintenance, and the BMW will overall be better and the transmission is a lot more fun too.

I've had both (I had a 1992 Jetta and currently drive a 1995 525i) and they both were and are really good cars. I prefer the Bimmer because of all of the luxury features (like power windows and AC, such a godsend) and people think I'm rich when I tell them I drive a BMW so that's most definitely a plus.

The Jetta crapped out at like 280,000 miles and the BMW is currently at like 170,000 so they both last a while as long as you maintain them. My siblings have owned domestic cars and I can't say they've lasted as long...
