Is this Love that I'm hearing? The V-day DJ Mix Competition 2008

Hey everyone, it's that time of the year again where love is in the air. Here's the rundown on last year's comp...

As we kick off the new year we kick off our competition with everyones favorite day in mind, Valentines Day. There were mixed feelings regarding the theme of this competition which leads me to believe we're on the right track. Think about it.. What would this overly commercialized day of love (Or lack there of) be without needless drama? If anything it would be a day for you our forum DJs to spin what they're going to be doing on this day of reckoning, V-Day.

I was thinking about it and instead of going for the old, 'What does this day make you, the DJ feel like' you're going to be spinning a themed set of what you're going to be doing on this day of love.

I've concocted a set of themes that should cover the major interesting possibilities of the Hallmark Holiday. Are you going to spend the day:

-Partying it up Pity style (Are you sad and alone)?
-Enjoying the companionship of your True Love (Eat your heart out Marvin Gaye)?
-Fuming over the results of your last fiasco (Yes, love hurts)?
-Finding your way into the heart of a potential sweetheart (Love can and will find a way to carry on)?
-Wishing your Special Someone weren't on the other side of the monitor (Gotta admit that Love spans continents)?

After selecting from the theme list above spin your set following the simple rules:

- You may compose your set using any medium (Vinyl, CD, Computer, Ect) from any school or genre of EDM.
- Your set is to be no more than 40 minutes long
- As before the competition remains anonymous therefore you may include an intro, outro or any number of smaples as long as they do NOT give away your identity.
- The use of vocal tracks is allowed HOWEVER you must include at least two non vocal tracks in your set.

That about does it for the technical aspects of the competition. Here are some further guidelines:

Once you've picked your theme, spun your set according to the rules and written a short explanation concerning your set, how it fits the theme using your tracklisting and a tracklisting including any samples you may have used contact me and I will issue you your very own participation number and uploading instructions.

Voting will commence on Feb 1st so you will need to have your set uploaded to our server no later than 11:59pm January 31st (P.S.T.).
Your set is to be 128k .mp3 format named as your participant number. Your tracklisting/explanation is to be uploaded with your mix as your number made using any conventional word processing software.

Voting will be like the last time where the voters will be voting on the top three that illustrate their theme with the tracks used. Once the voting starts you will not be able to vote for your own set. Any DJ that voted for his/her set will have his/her entire set of votes made null and void.

The winning mix will be submitted to DI for airplay on the DJ Mixes Channel.*

On February 1st, the official thread will open. Feel free to get some ideas out there people. Tag teams are an option and I'm thinking that 60 minute sets are the way to go.

this is the pre-comp-thread were we go over things to make it one-size-fits-all

you will also find that there should be 2 non-vocal tracks in the sets as iirc last year we concluded that we didn't want sets with all lovey dovey vocals that shout the love at you.

basically you pick one of the themes (alone, together, together alone - see 1st post) and transfer that the best with the tracks you feel fit the most.
looking at your sig I guess it won't be hard dance...

Damn 60mins... I was looking forward to the 40 min rule. IMO 40mins is plenty of time, and if we keep getting more and more contestants, it's gooing to take us awhile to listen to them as usual. Also, I think I may have asked this last time but when it comes to vocals what do we mean? A few words (sample) that repeats as a verse or an actual vocalist singing throughout the track? Just trying to see what I can put into my mix.

I enjoy mixing just about every sort of music from hard tribal psy and chillout to grunge, pop and D+b. As long as you can dance to it I'll mix it!
I thought I might do a psy trance mix with a valetines twist.....

I think just a short sample didn't qualify as a vocal track
and I think we established that it doesn't have to be EDM only.

Hawkster should have said read EVERYTHING in the first post, not just the "quoted" stuff.
DG suggested the 60 minutes as a timeline. It's not set in stone. If anyone decides to do a tag-team, I imagine the time limit would be 60 minutes (Inclusive of both mixes). This is the time to barter so throw your ideas out there.

He's referring to "an actual vocalist singing throughout the track" such as vocal trance or soulful house or synchpop or classic rock.

Don't disqualify yourself before the competition actually begins.

I did say 60 minutes in my post. You guys can do a 40 minute mix if you would like. As for vocals, I was thinking of actual vocals even if they aren't much in the track. However since it does say vocals and that is a vague term, I guess sampled ones would work but try to use two vocal tracks that are noticeably vocal tracks.

Yuck, Since when do they consider V-day as a holiday? That day is as cheesy as J-Pop. Atleast the mixes are A-OK, good luck guys.
