jabberwacky.com might possibly also give babbage a mention, I ca't remember, but there used be loads of binary involved in those first computers!
Just thought I'd take a nostalgic glimpse back into the past I missed. |

It is called the Difference Engine, probably the second design. It was not constructed at the time of its design (19th century) by Babbage but later built using Babbage's own plans in 1989-1991. It is really an impressive device.
He also design an Analytical Engine which, if constructed, would have been the first Turing-complete mechanical device, programmable with punch card and all. They should try attatching a telegraph to that thing. Maybe it can convert the beeps into letters. Now that would be prehistoric internet.
