Default 2010 DJ Booth Competition Thread

I thought we needed a new place to discuss rules, themes for all the future competitions in the new year, so this is it.

First:

Should we stick to tradition and host our Annual Valentine's Day Comp or try our hand again at Usual Suspects competition I hosted last year.

If some of you don't remember the Usual Suspects, the basic idea was to get away from your usual genres and mixing techniques and try something fresh. Then the listeners would try to guess DJ names (from the list of participants provided by the host) instead of giving out points (see this thread for more info http://forums.di.fm/dj-booth/the-usu...d-vote-150617/).

V-Day comp should be self explanatory.

I am capable of hosting and participating in both, so let me know which one you would rather see happen next if at all happen (we need to make a decision by Monday because V-day is coming soon).

Second:
I very much like to see DI Railway Relay competition happen, and done properly as suggested by XYZ here (http://forums.di.fm/dj-booth/merry-m...4/index12.html). I don't really have any concrete ideas but it will most likely happen over the next few month. Right now I am hoping to see at least 7 (or more) long time members who are interested in taking a part in this.

Third
I did not give up the idea of a 10 minute mix competition. Let me know if anyone is at all interested.

Fourth:
Obviously share any ideas you have with us. Maybe there is a competition you wanted to host for a while now, but never mentioned...

Arrow next competition idea

I'm open to either the Valentine's Day comp since it's coming quickly or the Usual Suspects. The latter competition would be more fun since it involves deception.

i proposed a "pick a theme out of the hat " comp but some1 said that ppl wouldnt vote on the portrayal of the themes but rather theyre favorite genres. i think this would be a challenging comp if it could be pulled off right

V-Day should start soon, also Usual Suspects sounds good too
i can participate in both, got some ideas already

as far as the Railway one goes, i've been trying to come up with ideas how to make it easier to accomplish but i FAIL

assuming that i understood how this will go
only thing i can think of is for one person that has downloaded the whole thing to cut it and to give each participant a part of it
but i don't know if it will work without seeing the whole video and than if the video will accompany the set that will be one big file
some people may be not be willing to download so much

There more I look at it the more I think it needs to be a colab project rather than a straight up competition. I have no problem cutting up the video into smaller pieces, assuming my video editor doesn't crash when i'll try to load a 22gb file.

That being said, I am also leaning towards the Usual Suspects comp in the meanwhile.

Considering I have been working on my vday mix the past 3 weeks, I'd say vday. I really don't want it to go to waste ahahah

I'm still liking the 10 minute mix idea, though the video idea we had awhile back.

I'd have to really dig deep for the usual suspects as I've been buying a lot of the same style of music I usually tend to mix. Can't even try to disguise my mixing style with my genre as no one else really spins electro here

Why don't you guys do the usual suspects in the summer? That's when the first one was.

who cares when other ones have been - themes such as vday just dont work well since too many people vote on genres they like regardless of how well the mix represented the theme described...

With that logic, what's the point in doing "themed" competitions at all then?

That was the only time usual suspects comp took place. And themed comps work well, just not for everybody. There is that one person out of 20. But I am willing to ignore that.

According to others, that's not true. If I thought so myself, I wouldn't have kept hosting them. As for the Usual Suspects, I was thinking of The Heist Competition for some reason. I don't know why.

I continued to say it doesn't work for 1 out of 20 people, which is a very small minority. People who refuse to even read rules and chose to ignore guidelines.

1 out of 20 people there Hawk? More than that man!!! I know for sure from all the comps that I have hosted. I don't need to go back and dig it all up.

EDIT: back on topic, either one is good. However some did say that they started on their V-Day sets already so I guess we'll see.

I pick Usual Suspects, but I'm not opposed to VDay (even though I personally hate the holiday, haha)

I'm sure many do, especially single people. Doesn't matter to me, either one sounds fun to me, I'm not hosting so I really don't care in that aspect. I'm still sticking with Phineas as to why we should even do a "themed" competition in the first place if people are going to vote for what they like anyway. Hawk didn't answer that and I'm not the one who brought up the question and yet, he decided to quote me. Your answer Hawk?
