Heya, I recently purchased a pair of 'sony mdr v700s' off of ebay.. I recieved them and they came in a japanese box, and they're labelled sony mdr z700.. a friend of mine own the real(?) sony v700s and his cord is totally different then mine, I didn't get a carrying pouch, and on the top headband, it does not say SONY..
I'm curious to know if these are fakes, and if sony japan does infact manufacture these 'sony mdr z700s' they sound quite good, just like they should sound.. i'm just really paranoid the attatched image is of the 'z700s' Last edited by lainrazella : Jul 6th, 2005 at 11:19 PM. |

This is the first time I heard of a "z700s" but after a little research it seems that there is such a model in sony's catalog here.

hi i have purchased the exact same ones on ebay. there is no logo on the
headband (the one in the photo showed one), they look and sound real but its really annoying me, i just want to know if they are real! the box they came n did seem fake, there was no leaflet or carry case etc. i think they're fake but i guess they could be the cheaper jap alternative. |

^^ Can you post pics? Don't see why Sony would produce a "cheaper jap alternative" since the company is Japanese itself.

It's probably just a slightly different version. Many big companies have slightly different versions of their products for different parts of the world, sometimes even entirely different company names while it is really the same. Take the car brand Opel for example, the english speaking part of the world knows it as Vauxhaul. Or iRiver's H340 mp3 player, in the US it comes with less accesoires than in europe.

I too have purchased a pair of these infamous Z700's. I got a pouch although it was made of some seemingly cheap material which was horrible to touch. The box it came in was a bit weird also. Only difference from others was that mine came with the Sony lable printed and everything was as if it was the V700's. Besides the R being on the left and vice versa... That aside... I've tried my mate's v700's a while back and his bass was amazing. Mine were a let down, i don't know if it's the equipment I use but i've tested it on my computer, MD, psp. Results are still all disappointing. I've opened it up and inside where the apparently 50mm driver was ment to lie was some flat and unimpressive looking unbranded speaker in it's stead.

hey guys
i jus bought one of these 700s. It says its a Z so im gona assume so. Straight to it... -its got the logo on the head band -its got a gold plated screw on adapter.. -the housing of the 1/8" plug has sony moulded in it.. -the bag is somewhat shiny and velvity...(nfi if i spelt taht correctly) -the wire is coiled and one meter long when coiled -on extension using the 1/8" adapter plugged to a front of a computer it will extend to 2-2.5 m then the adapter comes out -the box it came in had two parts...the actual box..which had what seems like proper sony signifying and a covering cardboard layer (similar to how some books have the hard cover..and then a layer on the outside too...i suppose for protection i dunno) either way that seemed real...it said maid in japan i checked -inside a warantee sheet and another sheet with diagrams of different positions that the headphones can be used in...all in an asain language...im not sure if its japanese or chinease... i paid 40 AUD + 25AUD p/h....an hour later the same thing from a different seller went for 30 cheaper... interestinly i hv been monitoring the 700s availabel and my seller has not been making many appearances lately im a dj and a very keen ear. I am very specific with music...just one thing sounding off and i get cut...the bass on these things is ok...not something that makes me jizz..bt thats coz im comparing to proper subwoofers....its the best iv heard from dj headphones....iv heard technix...seisenshe-wateva...and pioneer....altho i hv a pair of in ear bud headphones which produce better bass the high frequency sounds is bad. I havnt done any testing...and hv nfi how to...but from my knowledge i can guess that the response from 12khz up is lacking...once again compared to my ear bud ones.... the headphoens are not completely what i expect...but then agian i am not sure if thas jus my high music standard me or the actual product...iv read reviews on the VEES and ppl complain of two things....the shoddy material make up (plastic hinges) and a bit too much midrange... so basically i am content with the symptoms of fakeness (mine passed all those) BUT the lightness of the headphones and the feeling of them being toys and the lacking in high response has got me any help would be appreciated coz if these are fakes...they are FKN good fakes.... one thing i want to adress....i have not seen in person "real" 700s BUT if any1 has...can u tell me if there is that R in a circle registered trademakr logo thing next to anywehre whre sony is written ? Mine doesnt hav anywhere on the actual headphones or wire....i cant rememba if the box or the materials do...and the pouch has a little tag saying sony in white...but no R once again i checked on the official sony website and there is no registered trade mark R on the pics on that site...hmmm... i cant post the link for the ebay site i got it from but search for "260042057433" on ebay and it will come up with the exact ones i got i got my frnd to get em for me coz i havnt got a paypal account...or a credit card for that matter.... anyway help would be appreciated pce Raji |

Hi there.
I have recently been borrowing my mates MDR-v700's and thought they were amazing, so as most people do these days, i logged onto ebay to try and get a bargain. Surprisingly enough i found a pair just like my mates and even better news is that they were the model up- the MDR-Z700's, and were only £25-bargain! Now i should have known better than to not check them out on the actual Sony website first, but they seemed to good to miss out on, so went and bought them. Anyway, they arrived today and i eagerly opened the strange boxing, only to find a pair which felt totally different to those which i had been using for the last month or so! For example, they are much lighter and feel really cheap, the padding around the headphones is totally different to the MDR-v700's, the coil is a lot shorter (which i hate) and for some odd reason they havent got 'made in Japan' written on them anywhere!! So as you can imagine i was fuming, i quickly logged onto both the UK and American Sony websites and couldnt find the MDR-z700's anywhere! Then i thought i'd try my luck on the Japanese Sony website (hoping there were lots of pics!) and sure enough i found the headphone section and even found the MDR-z700's! Now i cant post the thread onto the site because i am a new user, but if you go onto the japanese sony home page and type in headphones in the top lefthand corner and click the orange box next to it and then click the very first heading, you will then see a DJ logo on the right-click on this and you will then see the MDR-Z700's. It seems as though they are a cheap version of the V700's, i dont like them nearly as much and the sound quality is definately worse. I personally would stay clear of these cheap versions, but at least for piece of mind i know they are real! Hope this helps! |

i have Z700's too...
i was told they're the same as V's (only called Z on Japanese market).. but i guess they're not .. i believe the quality should be better... and definitely without "skipping" ... lets say i have left phone on 05 and right on 02 - i only hear it on one phone.. no stereo (and yes i have it set on stereo on mixer) but if i lets say change the left one on 02 or 01 ... i hear the whole stereo sound embracing my ears... >> http://www.ecat.sony.co.jp/headphone...&KM=MDR-Z700DJ i better buy technics

Just purchased the Z700 to replace my V700 - seller stated there was no difference..... there is!
These are a much cheaper model, they feel like cheap plastic & the sound quality is much more inferior to the V700 If you are a DJ / Producer - stay away from the Z700's. |

Ok guys after reading this thread i thought i would chip in with the information that i know about the sony MDR z700's
I've been to sony's asian catalogue site and all their models of headphones are indeed MDR Z's, 150's, 300's, 500's, 600's 700DJ, 900's and 900HD In europe and America they are MDR V's in Asia they are MDR Z's. If you don't believe me go look at this page...on the right there is a yellow box with all the models of headphones. http://www.ecat.sony.co.jp/avacc/hea...&KM=MDR-Z700DJ Yes there are fakes of these MDR Z700DJ's going about and the easiest way of telling the fakes are by: 1. the cord should not be shiny plastic...but rubber like and dull 2. the jack plug should be gold plated and the bigger adapter should screw on....NOT just click on. I bought a pair of these on ebay for £24.50 plus £9.99 postal, and yes i was worried i had a fake pair....but i checked all the things to outrule my pair were fake......my pair has the rubber like cord, and my bigger jack plug had to be screwed on....so i was lucky that i got a pair of genuine MDR Z700's....they came in a sealed box with a guarantee...although it's in japanese.....but what the hell a pair of MDR Z700's that are exactly the same as MDR V700's for less than half the price.....cheapest i can get V700's in the UK are for £77 Here are pictures showing what to look out for in the fakes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hope this clears up the difference from fakes and genuine Sony MDR Z700's All specs of the V700's and the Z700's are exactly the same.....only difference is the pair i bought are The Japanese domestic released version.

OK guys....update on this shit about Fake Sony MDR Z700's
I took my pair to the Sony Centre shop in Glasgow today, who verified that these headphones are indeed FAKE!!!!!! The guy pointed out various mistakes on the packaging, such as faded colours, the picture of the coil cord was faded compared to an original box......and also the barcode on the fake box is not a stick on barcode....also the original box is wider by about 2-2.5 inches......upon inspecting the fake headphones he told me they are very very good copies and would be hard to tell they are fakes without the packaging......only one thing on the headphones themselves pointed to fake....the Sony badges on the earcup were scratched and i noticed this when i got them. So guys beware of these FAKE Sony MDR Z700's..........THEY ARE FAKE!!!!!!!! Just bought myself a pair of Citronic HP500 Pro's and i would recommend them....great build quality....great sound....detachable cord.....supplied with 2 cords....1 coiled and 1 straight....the straight 1 is about 5 metres long.....coiled 1 is shorter. Now it's time to seek and destroy ebay seller who sold me the FAKES!!!!
