Creative Zen X-Fi FTW !!!
works absolutely great, no complaints whatsoever.
sound and build quality is excellent, i highly recommend it to anyone that seeks more than what the average wants you to have.

I think the problem here might be that some users may be mistreating their iPods. They're like little computers, and just as fragile. Subject it to impact or spill liquid on it and it's fried. Even if you just casually toss-slide it on your desk it could cause errors and playback problems. Keeping the software updated also helps.

Assuming from the very first post some 3 years ago, the iPod has improved vastly

a bit overpriced, yes
buy a used one

if you are used to iTunes or Mac, better buy an IPod.
Same iPod for more than 3 years, still no problems. Though I should upgrade to the 160Gb soon because my current 80Gb can no longer contain my entire iTunes library. I'll wait til the price goes down a little first.

I can't stand itunes. I'm constantly playing 52 card pick-up with my own library. Or should I say libraries, as there's 3 different versions in varying states of disarray. I just want a folder in windows explorer, drag and drop, and my own separate player!!!
As for my 120gb ipod, its a great piece of hardware for the purpose of listening to music. Its small (for the capacity), reliable and navigation is very quick. Its just a shame that battery life has depleted in the year I've had it.

Don't EVER buy Ipods !
I've never did that (because Apple made that and...)
my cousin bought one (shuffle I belibe) and his brother brought the Classic one and I can say that my bad tho*ts became alive.
At first it's not an mp3 player (but should be!). The sound is terrible and also so f@ki'n quiet that I can't hear it all volumed to maximum. It also works SLOOOOOW (really slow) and all the 'great features' really suck. I belive kind'a crap should cost not more than 100$ because it's not a good music player no matter what sexy functions it has (other than player).
So.... now I'm sure I'll never get an Apple ear-killer for me no matter how many people has it.

Holy crap. This is probably one of my famous threads
I actually bought minis or whatever they are called for my 2 cousins (7 and 9) who were dying to get one for Christmas. IMHO, it's still an awkward piece of poop. iTunes is an insane 90 megabyte download... for a flipping audio player?? Then, of course, it took me about 6 minutes to figure out how to sync and do all that god-awful crap that i hate about these players just to throw a couple of tracks on. Mind you, i'm a software engineer myself and if i it takes me this long to figure think hunk of crap, i don't see it as a good product. Apple really needs to figure out a less cluster-f*cky way to add music to this thing. It's just plain ridiculous. I don't know why connecting it as a USB device, creating appropriate folder structure and dragging and dropping music on this thing isn't an option. Apple could even set out to create custom folder options for different types of media files. The possibilities are endless and yet you have to use their awful iTunes player to do everything.

Famous or favorite, Serg, my friend?
I've received 2 IPODs as gifts last year on top of buying myself a Creative mp3 player. The Creative was far easier to understand and get to work and the sound quality matched that of IPOD imo. I hated having to download all that crap from the Apple site BEFORE I could get my IPOD to work. Like you, it took forever to figure out. Weeks I think. And it's still a pain in the ass. A lot of features I haven't bothered to figure out. But the 4th generation IPOD is my constant companion. The other one which houses 36GBs stay at home mostly. Both are a pain to recharge and I'm not ready to buy an Iphone charger for them yet. I like the Iphone chargers better than the chargers designed for the IPOD.
Back to the space channel.

2. My iPod is over 3 years old and is just here recently having battery problems. No real other issues.
This is a bogus statement. I expect Apple, after years of experience to build quality materials. I like apple ipods, they have lasted me for years and the ipod touch is a dream to use. None the less, entry level models do not differ in build quality from the higher-ends. The only difference is capability.

I-Pod'ish sound quality - suck hard.
It is the final argument to buy another brand player.
