Worst part is probably that in both cases the person who died just had really bad luck and couldn't do anything at all about it. Both crashes would have been far less bad had it not been for major equipment failure. Simoncelli just had terrible luck being hit by two bikes, but what made it particularly bad was that his helmet was ripped off by the force.

And the guy in the indy car died because of a combination of mechanical failure and terrible design. That oval track has some of the worst "safety" features i've seen in racing. Crashing at 350+kmh is bad enough by itself, but he did it airborne upside down and on fire. And as if that wasn't enough, the roll-bar on his car was ripped off meaning that upon impact it was him, his head and upper-body, that took the full force of the crash. That's all extremely bad, but it get's worse, much much worse. For some reason someone thought it was a good idea to put FENCES next to the track. At such speeds those fences act like a cheese grater. Anything that hits them is completely torn apart. And this guy hit them in the absolute worst possible way, literally face first at very high speed. Go figure. I've always said that fences next to a racetrack are bad, especially if there are open-wheeled cars, and this guy showed exactly why.

ya mechanics should really look over the racing tack to make sure it is safe. and don't put a fence around the track

Actually, a helmet breaking on impact isn't as horrible as it sounds, from my point of view. Being someone who has wiped out hard while riding, had their head go towards the ground, had the helmet I was wearing crack in two and go flying... and I do realize that could have been my head to have cracked. But I am perfectly fine. The helmet did its job, it saved my head, even though it broke itself by snapping in half.

Still though, there needs to be some serious updates in the regulations of racing, I think.

Well my brother was telling me is that simoncelli was trying to use his leg to push himself back up to get control again (thats what they try and do apparently)
it was just unfortunate that the other 2 riders happened to be there.

Not if a large part of the damage is yet to be done in the following second. He was hit hard multiple times shortly after eachother. One of the first hits took off the helmet. Breaking is one thing, coming off completely a very different. In a crash like this any head protection is better than nothing.

Trying to figure out what part of "snapping in half" is different from "coming off completely". The dang thing went flying about 20 to 30 feet, somewhere in there. And I did say from my point of view. His point of view was far worse.

That type of crash, I doubt anything short of adamantium skin would've saved him.

I'm not talking about your helmet snapping in half, i'm saying breaking is good, coming off is bad. And what does this have to do with anybody's point of view? It's not like opinion matters the moment your head hits the ground.

As the person who had done what I did, my point of view stands out differently. Not my problem if you can't get that or don't care about it, it just is what it is.

I don't care what your point of view is, your opinion is your opinion and that's all nice and stuff, but i just wonder why the hell you keep going on about it. What does your point of view have to do with simoncelli's crash? Slow motion video reveals frame by frame what happened, you go see the video and then tell me that his helmet coming off wasn't the worst possible thing to happen at the time it did. Whatever happened to you has nothing to do with any of that.
