Talking Teens Turn 'Repeller' into Adult-Proof Ringtone

NEW YORK - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class and many teachers can't even hear the ring.
Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing.
As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds.
The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers -- not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the "Mosquito."
Donna Lewis, a teacher in Manhattan, says her colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders -- and all of them could hear it, while the adults couldn't hear anything.

If you want to try to hear it, (BTW, I can´t ) you must click this link, and hear the whole history...!

so why not use vibro mode or no ring tone at all?

beh the noise, i can hear it way too good, it's like those old tv's...they drive me absolutely crazy

I remember one time long ago when i was little we were in a museum and there were tv's everywhere making a noise very similar, really loud and you just couldn't escape from it...it was so bad it even made me cry but my parents wouldn't believe me and said i was making it up to get out (museums weren't really what i was interested in...)

old tvs? half the stuff in my house does that...

mind you, i have an extremely wide range of audio frequency perception - makes life easier when m,astering stuff sometimes, but also means i can hear stuff that sometimes i would ignore if i were anyone else...

I couldn't hear the sound they used in the realaudio/windows media interview, but I could hear the one in the mp3 sample, and I'm almost 23.

yup... i can hear it. (im almost 21) my ears are still ringing (made the mistake of leaving my speakers up from listening to AST 2006 cd1)

My first reaction is... wow.. that is awesome... how typical for teenagers to use technology to get the better of the "oldies"

I'm sure someone will pass a law somewhere and there will be another big legal mess in some part of the midwest.

I am one of the few people who doesnt have a cell phone so this doesnt really apply to me.

All I know is if start hearing that go off in class I'm probably gonna go crazy. Hearing 2 seconds of that was torturous.

So everyone be warned.... or you may find your cellphone is suddenly incapable of making any ringtone.

unlikely seeing as it's the high frequency perception that drops off with age...

I can hear it.

Why would someone want to use that painful sound instead of vibrate?
