This thread was spurred by a couple of friends I have who are very good at this - they just have a habit of walking into a club and coming out best friends with the bouncer/with full membership/with a guestlist etc. These connections often lead to similar contacts within different clubs until it gets to the point where my one friend promotes for several clubs and can get into pretty much all of the clubs we frequent free of charge and get free drinks inside (the notable exception is home nightclub, which is too big and organized for just meeting someone who can get you in free).
So what these guys say the secret is is to just be friendly to everyone you meet and try to strike-up a conversation with anyone who's working there as the people are probably bored and would enjoy it. This makes sense, but does anyone else have any advice/experience they would like to share? |

that is by far the best way to find out about special events, get star treatment etc..(nothing beats going to the head of the queue when it's freezing cold, being allowed into the VIP area to see celebs high on drugs or getting your mates in free) but being overfriendly when you're high can be risky - don't confuse networking to get the best out of the clubv scene with putting yourself at risk...
personally, getting to know DJs and other people who work at clubs has resulted in getting invites to afterparties and underground parties that were far better than the mainstream events that most people have access to...

i started helping out a couple of promoters with some of their gigs, doing lights/sound, and its not only a great way to meet people but a good way to get invites/guestlist etc to gigs around town. i hate when friends rely on that all the time though to get in somewhere

You'll always find, that as much as you may rely on certain special contacts to get you onto guestlists/VIP treatment, the further into the scene you get the further up the food chain you move and hence the more people try and leech off you.
it can be cool to be able to help out true friends, and get to usher them in ahead of the queue etc.. but there'll always be people trying to take advantage of you too. the whole commercial DJ/club scene has long been very like the rest of the music world - all about knowing people, and a whole lotta backstabbing, sucking up and falseness to be wary of as a result. (doesn't help when you throw cocaine use into that mix - always makes people into a***holes)
