Default A career in Math and Sceince why not?

Hey ok don't laugh....because I had a hard time not laughing.
But a part of my new gig is to find ways to educate kids (8-18) about the potential of pursuing a career in engineering and sciences.

Believe it or not there isn't much data out there as to why people pick one career path over another.
So, if you don't mind can you pleas help me out.

1) Your age (me 32)
2) How you did in math and science ( me B-)
3) Career path / what are you studying (me engineering)
4) Why? (my parents said I couldn't be a writer)

1. 22
2. varies, I do well in biology(B+) but struggled in algebra and chemistry(C-) (I have ADD)
3. General ed but moving into journalism or publishing depnding on which school i transfer too
4. I've been writing since I was little and am working on a manuscript(novel) which is around 285 pages ATM, and i'm going to try to get it published

I think its based on what your good at and what you like
but their are probably other factors too like finances etc.
as a writer, Its kind of sad your parents didn't encourage you
but hey a lot of authors had tough lives

you should check out on writing by steven king, some good advice and the challenges he had to overcome

Math avg ~98, Science avg ~92
Music Education
I tried out majoring in math, but once I got into the high maths, I realized it's not for me. Music is something I always want in my life.

So you started off in the science and math at university but were "bored out"?
But before that you were sure on the math science career?

Well, I was a music minor while majoring in math. At first, during middle school/high school, I was aiming for architecture, then, when in college, just something, anything, in math. But at college, music had been something I wanted to learn to, just not my main focus. But I saw the light (or rather, the horrors of high math) and have made the change

Just asking, some students I've interviewed indicated that they initially entered into the school of engineering because their parents had asked them to.

Bunch of indecisive people in it for the money instead of the enjoyment

Actually I had nearly gotten into college for something I had zero interest in, because my parents told me I should. I can understand the mindset, and to be honest, it's kinda weak. Do what you gotta do, because in the end, you are the only one in your life who is always there for you.

Math and Science just don't interest me. Not in the slightest. It's like taking art history, sure I'm good at art, but I don't want to learn about a bunch of dead people who painted things. So yeah, I'm good at math, but I don't want to use it often just because it is part of a job.

1) Your age: 26
2) How you did in math and science: Was asked by the teacher to be a Mathlete. Was bad at science.
3) Career path / what are you studying: Radio Broadcasting
4) Why?: Because it is what I have always wanted to do.

mostly As w/ a few Bs (in math, science & Engr. , my overall GPA was only ~3.1)
actually wanted to be a veteranarian, but realized I needed a near 4.0 to get there and also realized that I liked chemistry a whole lot more than biology. after freshman year changed to Chemical Engr. & never looked back. I'm a Process Control Engr. by trade.

Thank you pleas keep going, this is fascinating. In some cases it confirms with my data and others it disputes it.
Quick question, did any of you know what an engineer or a scientist does? And if so can you explain?

Actually I looked into a lot of trades. I have grown up and still live in a heavily blue collar city. Factories galore. I think that's what pushed me away from the idea of being an engineer. I actually gave that job choice a serious consideration. After several years of working in factories and warehouses and farming and such... I have zero interest. I guess what you can get out of this is that being immersed in blue collar life actually made me not want to do trades at all.
