1) Your age: 18
2) How you did in math and science: Math - Around a C, never cared for it, was always boring. Science - A
3) Career path / what are you studying: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.
4) Why?: Plan to become a doctor. Love science so figured I might as well help people in the process.

Hey...don't you laugh. You haven't posted your data yet.

Thanks to my step fathers direction, i never dated any engineering girls. My minor is psychology and as soon as engineering classes were over I was with those lovely ladies. They looked better, smelled better and all around were less angry and more giggly.

Speaking of which. You only posted 1 grade...is the other so bad that you're ashamed to post it?

Ah no I'm sorry, I was a B- student on average. I got C+'s in math and A-'s in science. for an average of about a B-.

Did you ever thing about taking engineering stuff for hospital equipment and whatnot? I know it sounds odd at first, but lets say some chick found out the you created something such as the defibulator. Tell me that ain't gonna help your chances out. Really any tech in that field. Sure you aren't the doctor performing the surgeries, but he's useless without the equipment that has been provided by engineers. Actually without engineers, we'd probably have doctors visiting houses carrying black bags with basic stuff, who base their judgment off of previous incidents that they can compare you to.

As mentioned, there are all different types of engineers.

i know someone who has been the head electrical engineer for a large teaching hostiple for about 30 years now - he is a great example of how engineering can be interesting, rewarding and provide job satisfaction even within the famous [sp]burocracy of the NHS...

There is very little in your world that wasn't designed by an engineer.
Being an engineer is fun. Becoming one.....not so much fun.
Ugly girls, stinky angry professors who can't speak english, crappy books, horrible work load (18 credits a semester) and....next to no respect when you get out.

I fully realize this. Especially with taking a class called "The Impact of Technology on Society".

Today we were talking about healthcare and engineering. It made me think about this thread, which resulted in my previous reply.

I have a 13 in titanium rod in my right leg due to my oopsie this past summer.
If it wasn't for biomedical engineering I would have lost my leg.
See the problem? Work your ass off, make the world a better place...get paid squat and zero respect.
But I'm projecting my thoughts on your lives and I'm sorry about that.

Well your results will help me shore up my hypothesis.
1) Engineers become engineers because they have family members who are engineers.
2) People give up on a career in engineering and science after about a year due to being too boring.
3) Despite what every one thinks people do not prefer a sedentary life style and thus STEM should be marketed as such.

I should also mention for my data that my father is an engineer
and that did not make me want to get into it at all

Oh wow! See that is good info to have.
So even though he is an engineer...you didn't think it would be a rewarding career?

Actually my dad was a locomotive engineer, and I ended up with zero interest. Might fit in well with BW's comment.

He was a lifer at his job, worked the same place for over 30 years, and ended up hating it. Not the part of it being the locomotives, he loved those. But the company, the big shots, who sit there, and treat the little guy like garbage. And in the words of Red Foreman "And I gotta smile like a dumbass while I do it."

Hmm. The engineering part had no interest me, yet I attached myself to a certain part of what I like. Radio itself. Kinda like him and the locomotives.

I knew it would be a job that pays well
but i wanted to be an individual and not some younger clone of my dad, not that i resent him or anything
i had my heart set on writing/creative enterprises from a young age (been writing since I was 9 years old)
honestly I don't want to spend the rest of my life behind a cubicle in some office building

my dad was a civil engineer. he tried to talk me out of going into engineering. my 2 sons are both in engineering studies in college (we tried to talk them out of it too). that may say something about engineers not listening well.

I did not find engineering boring, but some do. i found more that the dropouts were either not wanting to work that hard or couldn't cut the grades.

Just curious, what was your reason for talking them out of it?

Honestly, I'd try and talk my kids out of arts/business/law majors because they're dime a dozen. Engineering is where it is and where it's always been. It's interesting, prestigious, well-paid and gives a great sense of accomplishment and achievement. Best of all, if you know what you're doing you don't get treated like you're replaceable, because the truth is it is hard to replace a good engineer and next to impossible to replace a great one.
