Default What is your vision of a utopian society

I was thinking about futuristic societies and alduos huxley's novels like brave new world and island today and realized over thousands of years man has had different interpreations of what the perfect society would be like. Often times one mans dream paradise may be a nightmare for others.
So lets pretend all of our major problems our solved, how would you describe an ideal utopian society assuming one is possible
we create our own futures and its good to bounce ideas back and forth so we can systematically elimante the visions that will lead to 1984 or farenheight 451

i would live far away from civilization with my family and everybody would just leave us the **** alone

there would bee roads in perfect condition twisting through the hills going from our house to absolutely nowhere and absolutely no traffic on them ever

and 1 road to a far away village with shops. so we can buy stuff

a place in italy in the hills, miles away from major citys, it would be on a coast line and the closest village would be filled with people who knew everyone and were always friendly. there wouldn't be any news, mainstream radio or newspapers. the only thing we worried about was what to have for dinner

Solved or didn't exist... because if we happen to solve many of our problems our society would be very different to start with... but if we assume many problems just didn't exist I would call our current society Utopian. I realize this has no impact on the thread... Captain Obvious in me had to make a point.

Realistically speaking Utopian societies need to be small scale to be manageable. Since this is no longer possible on planet earth... I think space colonization should be a big part of creating a new Utopian society.

The problem with above is that I is only a small part of socIety. If your little village was staffed and supported by slaves even if they are robot slaves... its hardly utopian. A Utopian society should be a perfect balance of everything in life.

mmmm, bologna

A place where everyone's talents are put to use and they do no other thing than what they're best at. Ex, no scientists fixing toilets or farmers making instruments. And wherein there is no need for security for there is no one to cause harm.

what would happen in your utopian society if someone did cause harm... intentionally or unintentionally.

Well, my version is that the problems didn't exist. So your point is invalid in my empirical example.

But, to toss that aside, then I suppose it'd just degenerate into a non-Utopian place. And then that person is dealt with in ways humans have always punished.

I sorta like dustie's idea though. Having an abundance of time to spend with the people you love. The trips to the market provide a means so you can indeed have a time to interact with other people

I was leaning more towards the view that big problems such as aids/cancer/perpetual state of war, poverty, hunger can be fixed to an extent (say 99%) in a Utopia but neglect, accidents, intentional or unintentional "things" (I'm looking for a better word here other then crime...) happen no matter what.
How would a Utopian society try to deal with that.

What is a reasonable life span in Utopia? If we were able to extend our life indefinitely. Would such a society allow it.

Why do you keep trying to impose real world parameters on a utopian vision? the whole point is it isnt the real world...

Because I'd like it to be real. Something humanity would strife to achieve. Obviously never quite reaching it. An oceanfront resort isn't an option (unless global warming has a say in this).

honestly guys, I just wanted a thread with a bit more substance in the social commentary forum than shah's "getting with chicks threads"

I think its fascinating how many different ideas people have ranging from different backgrounds and cultures
