Default How do you pronounce Xerxes?

Xerxes if you are reading this, perhaps you could answer this yourself.

I'm a big fan, but have no clue of how to pronounce x-e-r-x-e-s.

A quick googling reveals that there was once a king of Persia named Xerxes, but nothing about the pronounciation of his name.

I've been pronouncing it a tad like the word "searches", but I guess it could also be pronounced with a k-sound like "curses".

Xerxes is pronounced zerks'-ez

He is named, presumably, after Xerxes the Great of Persia, who succeeded his father Darius I to the throne in 486 BC.

He was the first Persian king to enter Greece (Darius was the first king to fight Greece, mostly because the Greeks sent aid to Ionia--a province in modern day Turkey, under Persian control and mostly settled by Greeks, where ancient Troy sat about 1000 years before--to help stew an Ionian revolt from the Persians).

This feud brewed into war, and resulted in the infamous battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, where some 10,000 Spartans fought to the death, defending Greece from a 200,000-strong Persian army, the might of the Middle East. The battle took 10 days.

Horrified by the ferocity of the Greek warriors but nevertheless pressing on, Xerxes sacked the cities of Attica and Athens, but his naval fleet which was supposed to supply and upgrade his road-weary land army was destroyed by Thermistocles. Facing disease, fatigue and a supply-shortage, he begrudgingly turned his army around and went home. By the time he got back to Persia, uprisings had sprung up all over the empire. The Greek campaign had been expensive, and he instead had to divert his forces to Egypt and Babylon to quell revolts. And by the time he was done with them, he kind of lost all interest in a renewed Greek campaign. He decided to stay home and have fun with his harem instead, leaving care and control of the empire to most of his advisors.

Xerxes was murdered in 465 BC by the captain of the palace guard and was succeeded by his son Artaxerxes I.
