Default How much djs make ?

here's nice question ... how much djs make an hour or whatever ? ..

i think most of us would be interested to know that kind of stuff ...

people usually say that we all spinning the vinyl in clubs, raves, house parties, pool parties .. etc, because of love of music and crap like that but its not true .... it's all because we want to make money from it ... so money is a big factor .. right ? ..

so .. post your ideas on how much djs make ..

Lightbulb

i saw someone make a recomendation for a minimum of %$100/hour... so you do the math... and that was a recomendation for a fairly amature DJ...

but, always keep in mind that the DJ charges so much because the equipment and the media (vinyl/cd's) are so expensive, hehe (i would know, lol, that's why i only got 2 records right now, hehe)

Let's see.
A fairly known Dj would charge around $150 - $200 an hour. He'd spin for 2-3 hours in club a night. Normally all the parties happen on weekends, so he'd be spinning only 2 nights (sunday night isn't a good one to throw a party...)
So he'll make about $1200 at most for a week in BEST case scenario. That is if he's booked for 2 nights every week.
Then he might make quite some money.

Reality check.
He'll spin 2 - 3 nights a month at local clubs, and if he's lucky 1 - 2 sets outside. That's about $400 - $600 a month (+/- $200 for the gig outside).

Not much dough, is it?

Right now I make nothing because the rave scene is taking a crap where i live. On average I get 150 for an hour and a half or so. Biggest check I ever got for DJing would be 400 bucks for spinning at my school's dance for 2 hours(which ended up to be like an hour and 20 or so minutes because of sound problems). I also do a lot of volunteer djing though, especially when the party is free and the promotor isn't making anything off the party....

Here we go, this is from the December 2001 issue of Lotus and it estimates what a Dj would get for a Friday or Saturday night...

Top 10 Dj's: $15,000 - $150,000
Internationally Recognized: $10,000 - $25,000
Nationally Recognized: $4,000 - $6,000
Locally Recognized: $1,000 - 3,000
Local: $0 - $1,000
Bedroom: $0 - $100

As for me...at this point I spin for exposure (i.e. I'm still not getting paid), but I have been hooked up with things like free beer and other party related fun time kind of things. Hey, it ain't much, but it puts a big smile on my face I think that answers the question.

We book DJs normally $125-$200 / hour with, NO EXTRAS, however we do not use a hourly rate system. We have become to complex to go by a per hour rate. It is either a package deal or a custom quote.

Our average party is around $500 / 3 hours.

dude ***? Actually...I know alot of people who DO spin for the love. Just the chance to express your music with others is a great gift man, and the chance for someone to see your talent. Some of the people at this small local club get around $60 an hour, which is very little, but the club isnt very good (run down crack house ). They even refuse to take the money sometimes because they dont even want it.

but yes, the big UK superstars make ALOT of money, so much that we cant even afford them here in Hawaii

how can you say $60 an hour is 'very little'! That is huge money, even doctors don't earn that much. And especially compared to my dismal $4 an hour or so delivering pizzas.

I just spin for fun...I don't have my own equipment though.

If i had to spin at a dance or something I couldn't fit too much Trance in....people would complain haha.

I don't think I will ever be a DJ as a profession, just as a hobby/love.

yeah i guess ... but did u count how much was spent on equipment and vinyl ? ... 60 bucks like nothing ... plus if u have nice TTs, lots of vinyl, mixer whatever u wont work in pizza delivery for 4 bucks .. IMO .. (well ... maybe in burger king for 6 bucks an hour .. lol )

I spend ruffly 80-90% of what I make right back into what I do.
I spend around $5000 a year on music alone.

I actually mixed Drum n Bass and Hip-Hop at the dance. Beleive it or not, you CAN mix DnB into Hip-Hop and its VERY easy. I couldn't beleive it lol. Can anyone say Bad Company with Fugees?

of course you don't get those lovely free raves in Golden Gate Park now days, but promoters still run around these areas scouting for dj's that will rock the floor.
