Hard to imagine they would keep ignoring it this long, since its potentially such a large part of the game. Group treks to the netherworld sounds awesome.

I know some of you have performance issues - saw a post today about running it from RAMDISK, might be worth a shot

How to enable nether for SMP - aka server ports. Our server would "connect" to another server that is set to hellmode=true

the very interesting properties of the blocks that are unique to the nether are reason enough to me. hopefully the nether itself will be developed more in the future
also, about future plans to make torches die out and introduce lanterns that will last forever. good news Dustie, looks like when that update comes, all previously placed torches will be automatically converted into lanterns http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Lantern

"On November 11th, 2010 Notch hinted via his Twitter account that lanterns are no longer planned as a craftable items."

but I'd like lanterns
![]() then again, it would make torches redundant....and if lanterns were harder to craft then again people would be pissed off not being able to have permanent lighting everywhere...oh well

So the last 10ish days I kept digging a perfectly straight tunnel from my mine to the south, just above bedrock level. When I say straight I mean straight, I had to go through lots of lava pools, but today was crazy as I hit the mother of all lava pool clusters. I spent most of today extinguishing and cordoning off lava to be able to continue with the tunnel, and burning to death in the process. I think I learned some 4-5 techniques of lava removal, with and without water.
![]() If anyone needs to go south the tunnel is a good choice. It has 4 exits/entrances so far, first and most north is in my mine, and 3 more exits in more or less regular intervals as you go south. The part between my mine and the first exit has rails set up so you can travel fast via minecart. I plan on setting up rails through the whole tunnel, just need someone to spawn me at least 10x64 rails. Also a few minutes east of the first exit over water and some hills will get you to Phin's rave cave. So far only the first exit is visible on the map (the 4 lights on the sea close to each other going west-east, near some snow and ice), hopefully Trev can update the map soon so the other two will be visible. I think the third exit is the farthest south anyone has gone yet, so I think that I'll be taking an indefinite break from continuing on. I prefer to just avoid lava for the next few weeks and actually build a house so I can stop being a cave rat like ever since I started this game.
