I decided to explore them after finding out they were behind '1979'. I've only heard negative things about them, how they're lightweight poser stuff and their fans are whiney kids etc. But they have some powerful songs. I got Siamese Dream last night after being struck by all the glowing amazon reviews, and there's moments of pure melodic genius on it. I'm looking forward to getting into the lyrics and their other releases.

Makes me think of noble and proper cartoons like Animals of Farthing Wood. And the time I slept over at a freind's house when I was 5, which meant having to attend the village Sunday school the following morning. And in general the jolly functions held in wooden chapels that smell of mothballs. First-steps educational films; the cautious but resolved tempo of the synth. The comforting melodies, like a patient adult. Even the title. I'm thankful for my very early years, they were so good and nothing broke that magic. A loving and good natured family, their money, the early 90's, the geography (home, school, friends' and relatives' houses, days out), good friends, the tv and movies I watched down to the goofy bad guys, it was all in alignment. I was in a bubble. Now of course its contorted into something painful and yearning. Only sometimes though, when I let the guilt in. How do Boards of Canada do it? So many of their songs evoke it, and its not only for me or my circumstances. Nobody knows....I think that's testiment to true musical genius - its not just trickery or even some tangible set of ingredients (although sometimes they'll include more overt triggers).
